How the calculation works

For most categories, Whatnot's commission is a flat 8% of the sale price — no tiers, no thresholds. That's the "Standard / most other categories" option above.

A group of categories — Comics & Anime, Toys & Hobbies, Trading Card Games, Entertainment Cards, Sports Singles subcategories, Bags & Accessories, and Jewelry & Watches — get a reduced-commission promotion: you still pay the standard 8% on the first $1,500 of an order, but 0% on anything above that. On a $2,000 sale that's 8% of $1,500 plus 0% of the remaining $500, not 8% of the full $2,000.

Coins & Money gets its own reduced rate: 4% on the first $1,500 of an order, 0% above that — the same $1,500 structure as the high-value promo, just at Coins & Money's own 4% rate instead of 8%.

Payment processing is separate from all of that: 2.9% + $0.30, charged on the full order total (sale price + buyer-paid shipping + any tax) regardless of category, and it is never reduced by the $1,500 commission tier.

Some US states tax the fees Whatnot charges you. That state-level tax on fees isn't part of Whatnot's own fee schedule, so it isn't in this estimate — check your state's rules if you're close to the margin.

Take an $80 sale in a standard (non-promotional) category, with a $25 item cost and $7 in seller-paid shipping. Here's what Whatnot actually takes and what you keep:

Frequently asked questions

Does the $1,500 tier apply to everything I sell on Whatnot?

No. It only applies to the categories in Whatnot's Reduced Commission on High-Value Orders promotion (Comics & Anime, Toys & Hobbies, Trading Card Games, Entertainment Cards, Sports Singles subcategories, Bags & Accessories, Jewelry & Watches) and, at its own 4% rate, to Coins & Money. Everything else pays a flat 8% with no tier.

Does the $1,500 tier reduce my payment processing fee too?

No. Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30) is calculated on the full order total no matter what category you're in or how the commission tier applies. Only the commission itself gets the reduced rate above $1,500.

Does Pallets (Wholesale) get a special commission rate?

We couldn't confirm this directly on Whatnot's official pages, but nothing we found lists Pallets/Wholesale among the categories with a reduced rate — only Electronics (5%) and Coins & Money (4%) are called out that way. This calculator treats Pallets as the plain 8% standard rate and flags it as unverified. Check Whatnot's current terms before relying on it for a large Pallets order.

Are these category promotions permanent?

No — Whatnot describes the high-value tier as a promotion, and its list of eligible categories has already been expanded more than once. Rates here reflect what's publicly documented as of the verified date below; check Whatnot's current terms before relying on a large order.
